Just want to guage if there is any interest among members for doing some 1/18 Electric Indoor Racing over the winter months, most likely from late October until the end of February.

Most of the major manufacturers have models and here are links to some of their websites:

Losi - XRay - LRP - DuraTrax - Team Associated

I'm sure there are more, but these are some of the examples of whats available.

Cost wise, if we can do a batch order will work out in the region of €100-€120 euro for a ready to run kit, the only extra you will need is some batteries for your transmitter and mayby a spare battery pack for the car, possibly costing €20-25

If we are to do this there would be some basic rules to running it for the first year and assuming all models are purchased as RTR Kits, such as all cars must be run stock as supplied but the manufacturer, ie standard motors and Nimh/NiCad battery packs. This would have to be enforced to make it enjoyable and relatively inexpensive for all involved.

So after all the above some questions that need to be answered:

How many are interested ?

When do we run race meetings ?

Options would be as follows:

  • Replace Mini-Z night with 1/18
  • Run on another night of the week, if so which one
  • Alternate or replace Sundays at Mother Hubards for Nov-Feb
  • Or put forward your own suggestion
Feel free to leave you comments here or email them to the club email address galwaymcc@gmail.com

Sounds like a great idea. We just need a place to race that is indoor.
Do you have any specific class in mind or "open" competition?

I'm 100% in.But as I do not like road to Ardrahan Smile it would be nice to find some place closer to Galway or in Galway. That hall in Renmore is really nice. Or, maybe hall in Carnmore Comunity Centre on Monivea Rd. I’m just not sure about mod-restrictions. Why not modify our cars? We racing off-road buggies and every single car is different. So why not do same thing with indoor cars? That might be a beginning of something really cool and huge part of our hobby, not just gap-filler, something  to do during winter.

We can build some portable ramps, bumps etc. For 1/18 everything is a lot smaller.

Anyway. I think that’s a great idea and it would be nice to do something with that. Technical question: can we use our lap-time system for that? Probably we gonna need another loop-thing, right? What about Mini-Z's, ha?

Well we seem to be getting a lot of good feedback and interest in doing something differenent for a few months in the winter.

@Piotr  I think we'd try to have every one have the same class/type of car.

@declan I think either something along the lines of the mini-T or Buggy

This doesn't mean they have to be the same model, they could be from different manufacturers, if that's what people want.

@BALCER yes everything would be on a much smaller scale and portable. I'm pretty sure the AMB transponders we're using off road will work, the loop only need to be a piece of earth cable and can be covered with some carpet or a bridge made. The reason to restrict mods to start with is to limit the cost on people starting off and make it as cheap as possible for everyone to start, this is the way we started off road, most of us started a few years ago with RTR and it's only in the last 3 years or so we started expanding into race spec buggys.

At the moment this is only in discussion, so no days to run it or where it would be run have been set, I just want to get club members feedback and feelings on the subject.

I wouldn't worry about budget that much. Costs of decent RTR in that clas is about 30-35% of cash that has to be spent on 1/8 nitro buggy. It is just cheap, parts, upgrades etc. Other thing is the differences between cars are not as huge as it is in 1/8 nitro buggies. For $120-$150 you can get an entry level 1/18 electric buggy. For next $100 you can get plenty of upgrades. That 100 dollars is pretty much nothing in world of nitro 8th class buggies, piston and liner can cost more sometimes Smile

I would say: lets buy cars in the same class (I like buggies). RTRs obviously. And then we'll see. If we gonna like it we will upgrade our toys. Simple.

Now in off-road every newbie has an RTR. My point is: we all gonna be noobs in 1/18. Start form zero but no restrictions. And really; don't worry about the cash that much. E.g. for $200 it is possible to buy serious competition buggy without motor, esc and electronics. So.. pro kit. How much you have to spend on similar thing in 1/8 off-road? About $700. Thats just example how cheap it is compare to our rides.

Ok Ive just made the logs section of the track.

2 bulk packs of 10 Pencils!     Smile

Im kinda in but would be interested in the cost of this! e.g. batteries are the killer although I do have new spare ballistics 4500 for the starterbox?

Cost of a Xray MiniT plus 2 batteries? is that even enough batteries?

This would still generate race fees but I would prefer to keep my shit quick for 1/8th?

If there are 5 or more perhaps Pete can get some form of price match or offer going for all the buggies and the batteries?

"Wheres my Mini-T gone??...  Who let that dog in!!!"

I think that driving RTRs in the same class is the best idea. Results will depend more on driving skils not on the amount you spent on the car.

So correct me if I'm wrong:

U think our results on 1/8 buggies are all about equipment?

hmmm...

I do not think so.

If you want to tell anyone stuff like: you can not buy that upgrade for ur car coz you won't be alowed to race with us - it is not gonna work. For sure.

Plus one RTR is different than the other. Do we have to buy the same toys? No, coz it would be dumb. So at the start point there are some differences in equip.

P.S. Nick. I have no freakin idea what the hell are you talkin about. Smile

no you can buy any RTR 1/18 you want losi or Xray or any other one what sell them there is no upgrading your motor or to lipos we are trying to keep the cost down and if you do upgrade it will make it faster and if it make faster it will start to mark the floor in the hall and we will not be alond to do that

Well.

I wasn't thinking about brushless+lipo. Rather simple upgrades like shocks, aftermarket parts etc.

BTW: If the motor config is to powerfull all you have to do is to change the pinion. Easy, right?

Anyway. Lets decide what kind of rides we want to have!

1/18 - 4WD - Electric - RTR - Buggy/Truggy

is this what we want?

P.S. And don't mention costs anymore cause for 2 avg. servos for our 1/8 you can buy the whole thing in 1/18. Jeeezzz...
